Pattaya
On this page
Pattaya is a big beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand, about two hours from Bangkok. It's known for its nightlife, but much of the city is now aimed at families and weekend visitors, with island trips, gardens, water parks and plenty of seafood. It's busy and commercial rather than idyllic, so where you stay shapes the trip more than anything else.
At a glance
Best for: short beach breaks, island trips, family attractions and nightlife.
How long: two to four days, or a long weekend from Bangkok.
Getting around: shared pick-up trucks called baht buses, motorbike taxis and ride-hailing apps.
Seasons: November to February is cooler and drier, March to May is hot, and rain is heaviest from about September to October.
Good to know: the city's main beach isn't its best, so go to Koh Larn or Jomtien for swimming.
The main areas
Central Pattaya. Beach Road, malls and restaurants, with Walking Street's adult nightlife in the south.
Jomtien. A longer, calmer beach south of the centre, with condos and family hotels.
Naklua and Wong Amat. The quieter, more upscale north of the city.
Pratumnak Hill. A leafy hill between Pattaya and Jomtien, with small beaches and the Big Buddha temple.
Highlights worth your time
Koh Larn. The island's beaches are clearer than the city's. In November 2026, public ferries from Bali Hai Pier started from about 30 baht each way and take around 30 to 45 minutes. Speedboats are faster but cost more. Go on a weekday if you can.

Sanctuary of Truth. A huge carved wooden temple by the sea, still being built after decades. In November 2026, guides listed adult tickets from about 500 baht, and it's the one sight in town you shouldn't miss.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden. Large themed gardens with cultural shows, south of the city. Prices vary by package, so compare what's included.
Family attractions. Water parks, an aquarium and theme parks suit children, and most can be reached by taxi.
Walking Street. A loud strip of bars and clubs that's lively and adult-oriented. Other areas are better for a quiet evening.

Food
Seafood is the local draw, especially along the piers and in Naklua, where fishing boats still come in. Always check prices before you order at beachfront restaurants, as seafood is often priced by weight.
When to go
November to February has the most comfortable weather and the most visitors. March to May is hot. During the rainy season, showers often pass quickly, prices are lower and boats may be affected in rough seas. Thai holidays and Songkran in April fill hotels with visitors from Bangkok.

How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?
About two hours by road, depending on traffic. Buses and vans run from Bangkok's bus stations and Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Is Pattaya family-friendly?
Yes, in the right areas. Jomtien and Naklua suit families, and it's best to avoid staying close to Walking Street.
Is the main beach good for swimming?
It's fine for a walk, but water quality varies. Koh Larn and Jomtien are usually better.
How long should I stay?
Two to four days is enough for a beach break, one island trip and the main sights.
