Car rental in Kaohsiung
On this page
You don't need a car for central Kaohsiung, where the MRT and light rail reach most sights. A rental makes sense for Kenting, Foguangshan, Maolin or Tainan, especially with family or luggage. Prices vary by season, so compare current rates, and budget for fuel, parking and tolls as well.
When a car is worth it
Kenting. About two to two and a half hours south, with beaches, coastal roads and Eluanbi Lighthouse. Traffic is heavy on holiday weekends.

Foguangshan and Tainan. Foguangshan's Buddhist complex is under an hour away, and Tainan's old temples and food are about an hour north.
Mountain routes. Roads towards Maolin and Alishan are scenic, but they're winding and can close after heavy rain, so allow plenty of time.

Before you book
Your licence. Rental companies generally ask for your passport, your original licence and a government-issued international driving permit. Rules vary by country. Japanese licence holders, for example, may need a Chinese translation instead, so confirm with the branch before you travel.
Where to collect the car. Pick up at Kaohsiung International Airport if you're heading out straight away, or at a branch near where you're leaving from, so you can avoid driving through the city.
Insurance. Check the excess for damage, and what happens after an accident. Police reports are often required before insurance applies.
Driving in Taiwan
The basics. Traffic drives on the right. Watch for scooters, which often pass on both sides and wait ahead of cars at junctions. Check over your shoulder before you turn.
Tolls and fuel. Freeway tolls are electronic, and rental cars usually settle them when you return the car, so ask how yours works. Bring your passport when driving.

Weather. Typhoons and heavy rain can close mountain and coastal roads, especially from about July to October. Check conditions before you set out.
