Activities in Kaohsiung
On this page
Kaohsiung is easy to do at a relaxed pace. Spend one day around the harbour, and another on the north side with Lotus Pond and a museum. The sun can be strong, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and late afternoon, and save air-conditioned stops for midday.
Around the harbour
Pier-2 Art Center. Warehouses, public art and small shops spread out along the old rail line. The outdoor areas are free, and some exhibitions charge. Rent a bike or walk the waterfront, and check closing days for individual galleries.
Cijin. Take the ferry from Gushan, about six minutes and around NT$30 in November 2026. See the lighthouse and fort, walk the black-sand beach and eat seafood on the main street. Check prices before ordering seafood, and swim only where it's allowed.

Xiziwan and the British Consulate. The old consulate on the hill has fine harbour views, and it's a popular sunset spot. The walk up is short but can be hot, so go late in the day.
Love River. Stroll the paths or take a short boat ride after dark. In November 2026, resellers listed boat tickets from just a few US dollars, though prices vary by boat and operator.

North and east of the centre
Lotus Pond. Walk the zigzag bridge to the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, then continue around the lake to the Spring and Autumn Pavilions and Confucius Temple. Allow a couple of hours, and start early to avoid the heat.

Weiwuying. A striking arts centre in a huge park, and it's worth looking inside even if you aren't going to a show. Check the programme to see if there's a concert while you're there.
Dome of Light. Stop at Formosa Boulevard station to see the huge glass artwork. It's free unless you pass through the ticket gates, and a few minutes is enough.
Food
Night markets. Liuhe is easy to reach and touristy, Ruifeng is bigger and more local, and it usually closes on Monday and Wednesday. Go early in the evening, before the busiest hours.
Harbour eating. Try fresh seafood on Cijin, papaya milk and old-style ice shops in Yancheng. These are easy to fit in on a harbour day.
Day trips
Fo Guang Shan. A huge Buddhist site with a museum, gardens and an enormous seated Buddha, about an hour away by bus or car. Dress modestly and allow half a day.
Tainan. Taiwan's oldest city, known for temples, lanes and street food, and quick to reach by train. It's a good full day, or an overnight stop on your way north.
Kenting. Beaches and a national park at the southern tip of Taiwan, around two to three hours by bus. It's better as an overnight trip than a day trip.
A realistic two-day plan
Day 1. Pier-2 in the morning, the ferry to Cijin for lunch and the beach, then sunset at Xiziwan and Love River.
Day 2. Lotus Pond early, Weiwuying or the Dome of Light after lunch, and Ruifeng or Liuhe Night Market in the evening. Add Fo Guang Shan or Tainan with a third day.
Practical advice
Getting around. Use an iPASS or EasyCard on the MRT, light rail and ferry. The shared bike system is handy along the harbour, but it may need registration first.
Sun and heat. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, even in winter. There's little shade on Cijin or at Lotus Pond.
Weather. From about June to September, check for storms and typhoon warnings, as ferries and outdoor attractions can close.
