Car rental in Taipei

On this page

You don't need a car in Taipei. The MRT and buses are cheap and easy, and parking is hard to find. A rental makes sense for the northeast coast, Yangmingshan or Yilan, especially with family or luggage. In November 2026, listings started from about US$36 a day, but budget for fuel, parking and tolls as well.

When a car is worth it

The northeast coast. Drive past Yehliu, Keelung and Jiufen to Bitou Cape and the coastal viewpoints, at your own pace. Jiufen's roads get very busy, so go early on a weekday.

Yangmingshan. Mountain roads link hot springs, flower gardens and hiking trails. Parking fills up at weekends and in flower season.

Yilan. The Hsuehshan Tunnel makes it about an hour away in normal traffic, for hot springs, farms and beaches. The return to Taipei can be very slow on weekend afternoons.

Before you book

Your licence. Rental companies generally ask for your passport, your original licence and a government-issued international driving permit. Rules vary by country. Japanese licence holders, for example, may need a Chinese translation instead, so confirm with the branch before you travel.

Where to collect the car. Pick up at Taoyuan Airport if you're heading out straight away, or at a branch near where you're leaving from, so you can avoid driving through the city.

Insurance. Check the excess for damage, and what happens after an accident. Police reports are often required before insurance applies.

Driving in Taiwan

The basics. Traffic drives on the right. Watch for scooters, which often pass on both sides and wait ahead of cars at junctions. Check over your shoulder before you turn.

Tolls and fuel. Freeway tolls are electronic, and rental cars usually settle them when you return the car, so ask how yours works. Bring your passport when driving.

Weather. Typhoons and heavy rain can close mountain and coastal roads, especially from about July to October. Check conditions before you set out.
