Hotels in Surabaya
On this page
Surabaya is a big, hot working city, and most visitors come for business or on the way to Mount Bromo. That makes location simple: stay near your plans, because traffic and heat make long trips tiring. In November 2026, listings started from about Rp 63,000 a night for the most basic rooms, while comfortable business hotels usually cost several times that.
Where to stay
Tunjungan and the city centre. The best all-round base, with big malls, restaurants and the restored Jalan Tunjungan, which is lively in the evening. Most sights are a short ride away.

Old Town. Close to the House of Sampoerna, the Arab Quarter around Ampel and the Chinatown food street. It has plenty of atmosphere, but there are fewer good hotels and it's quiet in places after dark.

Gubeng. Handy for Gubeng railway station and for trains to Malang and Banyuwangi. It's a practical choice if you're passing through, with restaurants and malls within a short ride.
West Surabaya. A modern area with big malls and newer hotels, popular for business. It's comfortable, but a long drive from the Old Town and the airport.
Near Juanda Airport. The airport is south of the city, in Sidoarjo. Staying nearby makes sense for an early flight or late arrival, but not for sightseeing.

How to choose
Short city stay. Pick Tunjungan. You'll be close to dinner and evening walks, and a ride-hailing car can take you to most sights.
On the way to Bromo. Tours often leave around midnight for the sunrise, so a hotel near your pickup point helps. If you'd rather not lose a night's sleep, consider staying near the mountain. Ask your city hotel about holding luggage while you're away.
Using trains. Check which station you need, since Gubeng and Pasar Turi serve different routes, and they're on opposite sides of the centre.
What to expect
Business hotels. They're efficient and usually good value, often with a gym and a full breakfast. Ask for an early breakfast or a packed one if you're leaving before dawn.
The heat. It's hot all year, so check that the air conditioning works well and see whether there's a pool. Rain is heavier from about November to April.
Late arrivals. If your flight lands in the evening, confirm late check-in, and allow plenty of time for the drive from the airport at rush hour.
When to book. Rooms get tighter around the Lebaran holidays, year-end and big conventions or events. Weekday rates can also rise with business travel, so compare a few dates.
