Car rental in Singapore
On this page
Most visitors don't need a car in Singapore. The MRT and buses reach almost everywhere, taxis are easy to find, the island is small, and parking and road charges add up. A rental only makes sense with young children, a lot of luggage, or a plan to see several far-apart places in one day. In November 2026, listings started from about US$83 a day, which is high next to its neighbours, so compare carefully.
When a car is worth it
East Coast Park and Changi. A long seafront park with cycling paths, beaches and seafood stalls, about 20 to 30 minutes from the city centre outside rush hour. Carry on to Changi if you want a quieter stretch of coast.

Pulau Ubin. The ferry to this island leaves from Changi Point, around 30 minutes from the centre, and you leave the car on the mainland. Rental bikes are the usual way to get around once you're there.
Johor Bahru. The Malaysian city just across the border is roughly an hour away, plus the queue at the checkpoint, which can be long at weekends and on holidays. Many rental companies don't allow cars to cross, so ask before you plan it.

Before you book
Your licence. Rental companies generally ask for your passport and your home licence, and many also ask for an international driving permit, especially if your licence isn't in English. Rules vary by nationality, so confirm with the rental company or an official source before you travel.
Where to collect the car. Pick up at Changi Airport if you're heading out straight away, or at a branch outside the centre, so you avoid the busiest streets on your first drive.
Insurance. Check the excess for damage and what you need to do after an accident. Ask how road charges and any fines are billed to you.
Driving in Singapore
The basics. Traffic drives on the left, the same as in Thailand. Speed and red-light cameras are widespread, and drink-driving rules are strict, so don't drink at all if you're driving.
Road charges and parking. Busy roads use electronic road pricing (ERP), which charges cars automatically at set times. Ask the rental company how it's handled. Parking in the centre is expensive and usually charged by time.

Weather. Heavy downpours are common, especially from about November to January, and can cut visibility and slow every road. Allow extra time and keep your distance.
