Activities in Osaka

On this page

Osaka is best done at an easy pace: a few main sights, plenty of eating, and a day trip or two. Evenings are the city's strength, so don't wear yourself out during the day. Allow two days for the city and add one for each day trip. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are all under an hour away by train.

In the city

Osaka Castle. The park and moat are free, and they're lovely in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season. The keep is a modern rebuild with a history museum inside and a view from the top. Go early to avoid tour groups.

Dotonbori and Hozenji Yokocho. Come after dark for the neon and the canal, then escape down the narrow lantern-lit lane by Hozen-ji, a small temple covered in moss. It's only a few minutes away, but it's far quieter.

Umeda Sky Building. Two towers joined by an open-air observation deck high above the city. Go near sunset for city and bay views, and allow time for the queue at busy times.

Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku. An old-fashioned district with retro signs and a tower. It's known for kushikatsu, which are deep-fried skewers. Don't double-dip them in the shared sauce.

Kuromon Market. Go in the morning to graze on seafood and fruit. It's become quite touristy and prices can be high, so check them and share dishes to try more.

Day trips

Kyoto. About 30 minutes by rapid train, with temples, gardens and traditional streets. Start early to beat the crowds, and don't try to see the whole city in one day.

Nara. A compact park with free-roaming deer and the Great Buddha at Todai-ji. It's about 40 to 50 minutes by train and works as a half-day. Buy deer crackers only if you're happy to be pursued for them, and keep maps and bags out of reach.

Kobe. A harbour city with a different feel, known for its beef, Kitano's old foreign houses and the Rokko mountains. It's about 30 minutes by train, so you can be back in Osaka for dinner.

Himeji. One of Japan's best-preserved castles, about an hour away by rapid train or quicker by shinkansen. Allow two to three hours at the castle, and it combines easily with Kobe.

Koyasan. A mountain temple complex with a huge forest cemetery. The trip takes around two hours or more each way, so stay overnight in a temple lodging if you can. It's quiet after dark, and vegetarian temple meals are part of the experience.

Family and fun

Universal Studios Japan. A big draw for families and fans, particularly Super Nintendo World. Buy tickets ahead of time, check the current entry rules on the official page, and expect long queues on weekends and holidays.

Kaiyukan. One of Japan's largest aquariums, with a huge central tank and whale sharks, near the bay. It's a good choice for a rainy day, and you can add the nearby giant Ferris wheel.

Food

What to try. Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are the classic choices, and kitsune udon and battera sushi are also local favourites. A guided food walk in Namba or Shinsekai helps you discover small places. Try local specialities rather than chains.

A realistic three-day plan

Day 1. Osaka Castle in the morning, Kuromon Market or lunch in Namba, then Dotonbori and Hozenji Yokocho in the evening.

Day 2. A day trip to Nara or Kyoto, returning for dinner in Shinsekai.

Day 3. Universal Studios, or a slower day with Kobe or Himeji, ending at the Umeda Sky Building around sunset.

Practical advice

Getting around. Subways and trains cover everything, and a transit card saves you buying tickets. Watch out for Osaka's habit of standing on the right on escalators.

Crowds. Cherry blossom, Golden Week and autumn leaf season get very busy, so book ahead. Popular restaurants have queues, so go early or late.

On the day. Carry some cash for stalls and small shops, and bring comfortable shoes, as stations and day trips involve a lot of walking.
