Activities in Okinawa
On this page
Okinawa's activities centre on the sea, with culture and food filling the rest of your days. The main island is long, so plan by area: Naha and the south on one day, the central coast on another and a full day for the north. Five days is comfortable, and you'll want a buffer in typhoon season.
Naha and the south
Shuri Castle. The hilltop seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, reached by monorail. The rebuilt main hall is due to reopen on 23 November 2026. Paid areas have started from about ¥400, though one guide lists a higher price after reopening, so check first.

Kokusai-dori and Makishi Market. Walk the main street, then head into the market, where you can choose seafood downstairs and have it cooked upstairs. Tsuboya pottery street is a calm side trip nearby.
Gyokusendo Cave and Okinawa World. A long limestone cave beside a cultural village with eisa drumming, in the south. Allow three to four hours. The Peace Memorial Park is in the same area, and it's a sobering stop.

On and in the water
Blue Cave snorkelling. Cape Maeda is Okinawa's best-known snorkelling trip, and it's suitable for beginners with a guide. It can get busy and it's often cancelled when the waves are high, so plan it early in your trip.
Kerama Islands. Clear water and coral, reached by ferry from Tomari Port in Naha. Fast boats take less than an hour, and you can go for the day, but book ahead in summer and watch the forecast.
Whale watching. Humpback whales pass through from about January to March, with boats from Naha and Chatan. Seas can be rough, so take seasickness tablets if you need them.
Beaches. Stick to beaches with lifeguards and jellyfish nets, especially from June to September. Glass-bottom boats and mangrove kayaking are good if you'd rather not swim.
The north
Churaumi Aquarium. The whale shark tank is the highlight, and feeding times are worth checking. The official adult ticket started from about ¥2,180 in November 2026. It's about two hours from Naha, and pairs well with Kouri Island and Cape Manzamo.

Yanbaru forest. Subtropical forest at the northern end of the island, with hiking and rare wildlife. Go with a guide for the longer trails, and bring insect repellent.
Junglia Okinawa. A newer nature theme park near Nakijin that opened in 2025. Prices differ for overseas visitors and sources disagree, with one-day tickets from about ¥8,000, so check the official site.
Food and drink
Try Okinawa soba, goya champuru and taco rice, and finish with shaved ice. Visit an izakaya with live sanshin music in Naha, or join a market food tour if you'd like more explanation of what you're eating.
A realistic five-day plan
Day 1. Arrive in Naha, then Kokusai-dori and Makishi Market.
Day 2. Shuri Castle in the morning, with the south and Gyokusendo Cave in the afternoon.
Day 3. Pick up a car and drive to the north for the aquarium and Kouri Island.
Day 4. Blue Cave snorkelling and an afternoon on the central coast.
Day 5. A Kerama day trip or a slow beach day, then American Village for dinner.
Practical advice
Protect yourself and the reef. Use reef-safe sunscreen, don't touch coral, and follow posted warnings about currents and jellyfish.
Plan for weather. Boat trips are the first thing to be cancelled, so do them early in your stay. From August to October, keep your plans flexible in case of typhoons.
Driving. Check the licence rules for your country well before you travel, and book rental cars early for summer. Don't drink and drive, as Japan's laws are very strict.
