Okinawa
On this page
Okinawa feels like a different country inside Japan. The Ryukyu Kingdom ruled these islands for centuries, trading with China and Southeast Asia, and that history still shapes the food, music and relaxed pace. Naha is the practical gateway, but the real draw is the sea: warm water, coral reefs and white sand, a short flight from Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei or Hong Kong.
At a glance
Best for: beaches, snorkelling and diving, island culture and slow holidays.
How long: four to five days on the main island, longer if you add outer islands.
Getting around: Naha has a monorail. Beyond the city, a rental car is the most practical choice.
Seasons: the sea is swimmable from about May, and typhoons are most likely from August to October.
Good to know: the main island is about 100 km long, and traffic around Naha makes it feel longer.
Understanding the main island
Naha. The city base, with the airport, food, shopping and Shuri Castle, all linked by monorail. There's no real beach scene here.
Central coast. Chatan and Onna have American-influenced dining, big resorts and the easiest beaches.
The north. Nago and Motobu have the aquarium, Kouri Island and quieter coasts, with the Yanbaru forest beyond.
The south. Historic sites, war memorials and Gyokusendo Cave, an easy half-day from Naha.
Highlights worth your time
Churaumi Aquarium. Known for its huge whale shark tank, and about two hours' drive from Naha. Go early in the day. In November 2026, the official adult ticket started from about ¥2,180.

Shuri Castle. The symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom, rebuilt after the 2019 fire. The main hall is due to reopen on 23 November 2026, so check visiting conditions and fees.
Kokusai-dori and Makishi Market. Naha's busy main street and its covered food market, good for an evening of snacks and souvenirs.
Beaches and Kouri Island. Choose a resort beach or a quieter cove, and swim where it's patrolled. The bridge to Kouri Island is one of the prettiest drives in Okinawa.

Outer islands. The Kerama Islands are close enough by ferry from Naha for clear-water snorkelling. Ishigaki and Miyako are a flight away and need several extra days.

Food and culture
Okinawan food is quite different from mainland Japan. Try goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry), Okinawa soba, taco rice and sata andagi doughnuts. Awamori is the local spirit, and you can hear sanshin music at many izakaya in Naha.
When to go
April to June is pleasant, although the rainy season usually arrives around May. July is hot and sunny. Typhoons can disrupt flights and ferries from August to October, so keep some flexibility. Winters are mild but too cool for most swimmers, and that's whale-watching season from about January to March.

Do I need a car in Okinawa?
Not for Naha, where the monorail is enough. For the beaches, the aquarium and the north, a rental car is the easiest option, though tour buses cover the main sights.
When is typhoon season?
Mostly August to October. Leave some flexibility in your plans and check your cancellation terms.
Is Okinawa good for families?
Yes. Calm beaches, resorts and the aquarium all suit children. Check sea conditions and swim only where it's allowed.
Can I visit outer islands?
Yes, by ferry or flight. Allow extra days and check the weather, as services can be cancelled.
