Hotels in Nagoya

On this page

Nagoya works well as a base because trains run in every direction, to Kyoto and Tokyo as well as Takayama and Ise. Most hotels were built with business travellers in mind, so rooms tend to be small but practical. In November 2026, listings started from about US$39 a night, and the choice usually comes down to Nagoya Station for trains or Sakae for evenings.

Where to stay

Nagoya Station. The obvious choice for train trips, with the shinkansen, JR lines, subway and the Meitetsu and Kintetsu railways all together. The airport train arrives right here too. There's plenty to eat in the towers and side streets, although the station itself can be confusing at first.

Fushimi. One or two subway stops from the station, in a business district with good-value hotels. It's quiet after office hours, yet you can reach both the station and Sakae in minutes, and the science museum is close by.

Sakae. The city's shopping and nightlife centre, with department stores, Oasis 21 and the TV Tower. Choose it if you want restaurants and bars within walking distance. Nagoya Castle is also an easy subway ride away.

Osu and Kamimaezu. Near the Osu Shopping Arcade and its temple, cheap eats and vintage shops. There are fewer hotels here, but the neighbourhood has more character than the business districts.

Kanayama. A rail hub south of the centre with JR, Meitetsu and subway lines. It's useful for the airport and for getting to the Atsuta Shrine area. Prices can be lower here, but there's less to do at night.

How to choose

Count your train days. If you'll leave the city most days, stay within a short walk of Nagoya Station, and check which exit is closest, because the complex is large.

Plan for Takayama and Shirakawa-go. These can be long day trips. Staying a night in the mountains is often more relaxing, and many city hotels will hold your main luggage if you ask in advance.

Think about Ghibli Park. The park is east of the city, reached by subway and the Linimo line. Sakae and the station both work, so there's no need to stay out near it unless you want an early start.

What to expect

Room size. Standard business hotel rooms can be tight for two people with suitcases, so check the size and bed type. Larger international hotels near the station offer more space at a higher price.

Breakfast. Some hotels serve local dishes such as ogura toast or miso-based dishes. Check whether breakfast is included, because Nagoya's cafés also serve generous morning sets.

Late arrivals. Subways stop around midnight. If you're arriving late, a hotel close to the station saves you a taxi.

When to book. Rates can rise during large trade shows, the July sumo tournament and Golden Week, and during autumn weekends when travellers head to the mountains. Check prices on nearby dates if yours look high.
