Hotels in Hong Kong

On this page

Hong Kong rooms are small and expensive by regional standards, so focus on location and on what you'll actually use. The MTR and Star Ferry make most central areas easy, and many first-timers stay either side of Victoria Harbour. In November 2026, listings started from about US$48 a night, though rooms at that level can be very small guesthouses.

Where to stay

Tsim Sha Tsui. On the Kowloon side, with harbour views, shopping, museums and the Star Ferry. It's the most convenient base for a first trip, with a huge range of hotels. Budget guesthouses in some older mansions can be cramped, so check recent photos.

Central and Sheung Wan. Close to the Peak Tram, Soho's restaurants and the Airport Express at Hong Kong Station. It's stylish and hilly, and prices are among the highest. Sheung Wan has good small hotels and older streets.

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. Busy, local and well connected on the island side, with shopping, trams and lots of restaurants. These areas often offer better value than Central, particularly on weekdays.

Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei. Street markets, neon and noodles, with good-value rooms and fast MTR links. It's crowded and noisy, but it's the area that feels most like everyday Hong Kong.

Tung Chung and the airport. Handy for an early flight, Ngong Ping and Disneyland, with larger and often cheaper rooms. You'll spend around 30 minutes or more getting into the centre.

How to choose

Check the Airport Express. Hong Kong and Kowloon stations are the fastest way from the airport, taking around 20 to 25 minutes. Tsim Sha Tsui and Central are easy from there, while airport buses reach many other areas directly.

Don't pay just for a view. Harbour-view rooms can cost much more. Consider a standard room, then spend your evening at the Avenue of Stars or on the Star Ferry instead.

Look out for slopes. Hotels in Central and Mid-Levels can involve steep streets and stairs. If you have heavy bags or young children, check the walk from the MTR.

What to expect

Room size. Compact rooms are normal, and some may have no real window. Check the size in square metres, as well as whether two big suitcases will fit.

Guesthouses. Older buildings in Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok hold many small guesthouses at low prices. Quality varies a lot, so read recent reviews closely.

Typhoons. From about June to October, a typhoon signal can close transport and attractions, so check your hotel's cancellation terms.

When to book. Prices rise around Lunar New Year, Art Basel and the Rugby Sevens in March, as well as during big trade fairs and the Christmas period. Sunday to Thursday is usually cheaper.
