Activities in Guangzhou

On this page

Guangzhou is above all a food city, so build your days around meals and fit the sights in between. Morning dim sum, an old-quarter walk and a river view at night make a very good day. Two or three days are enough for most visitors, and it's also an easy base for Foshan or Shenzhen.

Food experiences

Morning tea. Yum cha is the local ritual. Go early, since popular restaurants fill up on weekends and some have long queues by mid-morning. Tick your order on the sheet and pour tea for others at the table. Try har gow, char siu bao and rice noodle rolls.

Old-quarter snacks. Liwan is the place to wander and graze, especially around Enning Road and Shangxiajiu. Look for busy stalls selling wonton noodles, stewed offal or fresh rice rolls, as these turn over food quickly.

Sweet soups and milk puddings. A dessert stop is part of the culture here. Try double-skin milk, ginger milk curd or a warm sweet soup in the late afternoon.

Roast meats and food tours. Roast goose and char siu are worth seeking out at lunch. A guided food walk can help if you don't read Chinese, because many of the best small places have no English menu.

Sights

Shamian Island. A quiet, tree-shaded island of colonial-era buildings, ideal for a slow walk and a coffee. It's free to wander, and it's best in the early morning or late afternoon.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. A beautifully decorated 19th-century complex with wood, stone and ceramic carving, now home to a folk art museum. Allow about an hour, and note that it's right by a metro stop on Line 1.

Yuexiu Park. A large green space with the Five Rams statue and Zhenhai Tower, plus a museum. It's a good contrast to the busy streets, and it can fill a relaxed morning.

Sacred Heart Cathedral and Beijing Road. A striking granite church in the old city, close to a busy pedestrian shopping street that has old road remains under glass. They combine easily in the evening.

Canton Tower and a Pearl River cruise. Choose the tower for height or a cruise for the view from the water, as both show the lit-up skyline. Ticket types vary widely for the tower, so compare what each one includes. Clear evenings are best, and booking ahead helps on weekends.

Baiyun Mountain. Hiking paths and viewpoints north of the centre, with a cable car if you'd rather not climb. It's a refreshing half-day out on a clear day, but it can feel hot and crowded on summer weekends.

Day trips

Foshan. Linked to Guangzhou by metro, this city is known for martial arts heritage, its old Ancestral Temple and Cantonese snacks. It's easy as a half-day trip.

Shenzhen. High-speed trains can get you there in under an hour. It's a very different, modern city, with design districts and parks.

Zhaoqing. Limestone hills and lakes at Seven Star Crags make a scenic full day out, reached by high-speed rail.

A realistic two-day plan

Day 1. Dim sum, then Shamian Island, Enning Road and the Chen Clan Hall, with dessert in Liwan and a river cruise at night.

Day 2. Yuexiu Park in the morning, roast goose for lunch, then the cathedral and Beijing Road, ending at Canton Tower around sunset.

Practical advice

Passport and bookings. Some attractions, boats and all high-speed trains ask for your passport. Keep it with you and check opening days, as some museums close on Mondays.

Payments and apps. Set up a mobile payment app before you arrive, as small stalls rely on it, and carry some small cash. A translation app with a camera feature will help with menus.

When to go. October to December is the most comfortable time. Spring is damp, summers are hot, humid and rainy, and typhoons are possible. The Canton Fair in spring and autumn can also make the city busier and hotels pricier.
