Hotels in Beijing

On this page

Beijing is vast, and its big sights are far apart, so a hotel near a subway line will save you a lot of time. The classic first-timer's choice is around Wangfujing or Dongcheng, close to the Forbidden City. In November 2026, listings started from about US$46 a night, and courtyard hotels in the old lanes usually cost more.

Where to stay

Wangfujing and Dongdan. A central shopping area within reach of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen, on Line 1. It's the most practical base for a short trip, with a wide range of hotels and restaurants.

Dongcheng's hutongs. Traditional courtyard hotels around Shichahai, Nanluoguxiang and Dongsi give you a real sense of old Beijing. Rooms can be small and lanes narrow, so ask how a taxi will reach you with luggage.

Qianmen. South of Tiananmen, with a restored shopping street, roast duck restaurants and easy access to the Temple of Heaven. It's touristy but convenient, especially on Line 2.

Sanlitun and Chaoyang. International restaurants, bars and modern hotels in the east, popular for nightlife and with expats. It's farther from the old sights, but well connected by subway.

Guomao. The business district, with big towers and upscale hotels. It's good for work trips and for views, and Line 1 goes straight to the Forbidden City area.

Near the airport. Useful for one night around a very early flight. Check which airport you need, as Capital and Daxing are on opposite sides of the city, and each is a long way from the other.

How to choose

Think in subway lines. Line 1 runs across the centre, and Line 2 loops around the old city. A hotel near either one makes most days easier.

Plan your Great Wall day. Most tours collect from central hotels. If you plan to go on your own, check how close you are to the bus or train you'll need.

Allow for security. Many central subway stations and Tiananmen have security checks, which can take time at peak hours. A few minutes' extra walk may be quicker than changing lines.

What to expect

Registration. Bring your passport to check-in, as hotels must register guests. If you book a small local hotel, confirm that it accepts foreign guests.

Seasons. Winters are very cold and dry, so check for working heating and consider a humidifier. Summers are hot, and spring can be dusty.

When to book. Book early for the national holiday in early October, Lunar New Year and the May holiday. Autumn is the most popular season, and rooms near the big sights fill up first.
