Car rental in Phuket

On this page

A car is useful in Phuket. The beaches are spread out along the island, buses between them are limited, and taxis for longer trips add up. If you're staying at one resort and only heading out for dinner, you may not need one. In November 2026, listings started from about US$19 a day, but budget for fuel and parking as well.

When a car is worth it

The southern beaches. Drive from Kata and Karon to Nai Harn and Promthep Cape, stopping at viewpoints on the way. It's roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Patong, and the sunset spots get crowded.

The northwest coast. Head up to Surin, Bang Tao, Nai Yang and Mai Khao for quieter sand. The airport is on the way back. Allow about an hour from Patong.

Phang Nga and Khao Lak. Cross the Sarasin Bridge to the mainland for the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, then carry on to Khao Lak. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way from the west-coast beaches.

Before you book

Your licence. Rental companies generally ask for your passport, your home licence and an international driving permit. Thailand's tourism authority lists an international driving permit, or a domestic licence from an ASEAN country, as what visitors can use. Rules vary by nationality, so confirm with the rental company or an official source before you travel.

Where to collect the car. Pick up at Phuket Airport if you're heading out straight away, or ask whether the company can deliver to your hotel. Patong's streets are busy, so the airport is often the easier start.

Insurance. Check the excess for damage and what you need to do after an accident. A police report is often required for an insurance claim.

Driving in Thailand

The basics. Traffic drives on the left. Wear your seat belt, and give motorbikes plenty of room.

Tolls and parking. Some expressways and motorways charge tolls. Ask your rental company how to pay them. In Phuket, beach car parks can fill up by late morning, and the streets of Patong and Old Town are tight.

Hills and weather. Roads between the beaches climb and bend sharply. The wet season runs roughly from May to October, when heavy rain makes them slippery and can flood low stretches. Check conditions before you set out.
