Jaipur

On this page

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and the Pink City, named for the terracotta-colored buildings of its old center. It is a city of palaces, hilltop forts, bazaars and crafts, and one corner of India's Golden Triangle with Delhi and Agra. Rajput history, royal architecture and a strong tradition of textile and jewelry making make it one of India's most visited cities.

Visitors passing through as part of a Golden Triangle circuit sometimes underestimate how much Jaipur alone can fill two or three full days between its forts, bazaars and craft workshops.

At a glance

  • Best for: forts, palaces, bazaars, crafts and food.
  • How long: two to three days.
  • Getting around: auto-rickshaws, taxis, ride-hailing apps and walking in the old city.
  • Seasons: October to March is the best. Summers are very hot.
  • Good to know: shop owners can be pushy, so agree on prices before buying or riding.

City layout

The Old City (Pink City) is walled and laid out in a grid, with the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar observatory. Amer (Amber) Fort sits on a hill about 11 kilometers north. Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts overlook the city. C-Scheme and Bani Park are newer areas with hotels and cafés.

The Old City's grid layout, a rarity among historic Indian cities, makes walking between the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar genuinely practical, while Amber Fort and the hilltop forts need a separate car or rickshaw trip.

Bazaars. Johari Bazaar for jewelry, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and Tripolia Bazaar for brassware.

Food. Try dal baati churma, laal maas, pyaaz kachori and lassi. Many dishes are vegetarian.

Nahargarh Fort at sunset. A hilltop vantage point above the city, a good contrast to the busier daytime sights and a straightforward end to a day spent in the Old City below.

Money and connectivity

Cards are accepted at larger hotels and shops, but bazaars, rickshaws and street food stalls mostly expect cash. An airport eSIM or local SIM is useful for maps around the Old City's dense lanes and for checking current entry rules at monuments before you go.

Responsible shopping

Jaipur is known for block-printed textiles, blue pottery, gems and jewelry. Buy from reputable shops, compare prices and be cautious about claims regarding gemstones.

When to go

October to March is the best, with pleasant days and cool nights. April to June is very hot. The monsoon brings humid weather and green hills.

A simple two-day structure

A workable plan is one day for Amber Fort in the morning followed by Nahargarh at sunset, and a second day for the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and the bazaars, all walkable within the Old City.

How many days do I need in Jaipur?

Two to three days covers the main sights.

How far is Jaipur from Delhi and Agra?

Around five to six hours from Delhi and about four hours from Agra by road.

Is Jaipur good for shopping?

Yes, but bargain politely and compare prices.

Can I ride an elephant at Amber Fort?

Elephant rides raise animal welfare concerns. Consider walking or a jeep instead.

Is Jaipur a good standalone destination, or only part of the Golden Triangle?

Both work. Its forts, bazaars and food easily fill two or three days on their own, even without continuing to Delhi or Agra.
