Car rental in Bangkok
On this page
You don't need a car in Bangkok. The BTS Skytrain, the MRT, taxis and river boats cover most of what visitors want to see, traffic is heavy, and parking is hard to find. A rental makes sense for day trips outside the city, especially with family or luggage. In November 2026, listings started from about US$19 a day, but budget for fuel and parking as well.
When a car is worth it
Ayutthaya. The old capital's temple ruins are about 1.5 hours north in normal traffic. You can see several sites at your own pace instead of fitting a tour's timetable.

Kanchanaburi. Allow about 2 to 2.5 hours each way to the River Kwai bridge and the war museums and cemeteries, with scenic countryside along the way. It's a long day, so start early.
Khao Yai. This national park of forest and grassland is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from the city. Staying overnight makes the drive easier to enjoy.

Before you book
Your licence. Rental companies generally ask for your passport, your home licence and an international driving permit. Thailand's tourism authority lists an international driving permit, or a domestic licence from an ASEAN country, as what visitors can use. Rules vary by nationality, so confirm with the rental company or an official source before you travel.
Where to collect the car. Pick up at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airport, or at a branch on the side of the city you're leaving from, so you avoid driving through the centre.
Insurance. Check the excess for damage and what you need to do after an accident. A police report is often required for an insurance claim.
Driving in Thailand
The basics. Traffic drives on the left. Wear your seat belt, and give motorbikes plenty of room.
Tolls and parking. Some expressways and motorways charge tolls. Ask your rental company how to pay them. In the city, parking is mostly in malls and paid car parks, and weekday rush hours are slow, so leave early.

Weather. The wet season runs roughly from May to October. Sudden downpours can flood city streets and slow every road, so allow extra time and check conditions before you set out.
