The 8 routes in detail

Nankai Rapi:t: the fastest way to Namba

If your hotel is around Namba, Shinsaibashi or Nipponbashi, the Nankai Rapi:t is the fastest and most comfortable option. This distinctive dark blue train takes just 34 minutes from Kansai Airport to Namba Station.

Advantages: every seat is reserved, and there's free Wi-Fi, power sockets and large luggage racks.

Fares and booking: a one-way ticket costs about ¥1,490. You can buy an e-ticket online before you go, and use the QR code to reserve your seat and enter the station, which saves queuing.

Nankai Airport Express: the budget choice

This train uses the same tracks as the Rapi:t and also goes directly to Namba, but takes about 45 minutes, around 10 minutes longer.

Advantages: trains are frequent, about every 15 minutes, and there's no express ticket to buy.

Fare: about ¥920 to ¥970 one way. You can tap in with ICOCA or Suica, which is very convenient.

Note: these are normal commuter carriages with no dedicated luggage racks, and they get crowded at peak times.

JR HARUKA: direct to Umeda (Osaka Station), Shin-Osaka and Kyoto

If you're heading to Umeda (Osaka Station), Tennoji or Shin-Osaka, or going straight to Kyoto, JR HARUKA is the main option.

Times: about 35 minutes to Tennoji, 45 minutes to Osaka Station (Umeda) and 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka.

Advantages: clean, comfortable carriages with luggage racks. Holders of a JR Pass can ride at no extra cost, and with luck you might catch the special Hello Kitty train.

Fares and booking: from about ¥1,300 one way. If you buy a QR code e-ticket in advance, you can quickly collect your ticket from the green machines at JR Kansai Airport Station.

JR Kansai Airport Rapid: a low-cost JR route with no reservation

The JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service suits travellers who want to use JR on a smaller budget.

Route: it makes more stops than HARUKA, reaching Tennoji in about 50 minutes and continuing to Osaka Station.

Note: for Namba, change at Tennoji to the Midosuji subway line.

Airport limousine bus: for large luggage, hotels and USJ

If you have several large bags, or you're travelling with older people or small children, the airport limousine bus is the easiest way to reach Osaka.

Popular stops: Osaka Station (Umeda), Namba OCAT, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and some large hotels (such as Hotel New Hankyu and Hilton Osaka). Check the current route for your hotel.

Advantages: staff load your large bags under the bus, and you can rest until you arrive, with no stairs to climb in stations. Many buses have free Wi-Fi and power sockets.

Fare: about ¥1,600 one way to Umeda, taking about 60 minutes.

Private transfer: door to door

For families or groups of four or more, or for very late or early flights, a private transfer from Kansai Airport is the easiest choice.

Advantages: your driver meets you with a sign in the arrivals hall, service runs 24 hours, and you and your bags go straight to the door of your hotel. Some companies offer drivers who speak other languages.

Vehicles: from 5-seat vans such as the Toyota Alphard to 14 to 22-seat buses.

Airport taxi: a 24-hour backup

There's a 24-hour taxi rank outside the Kansai Airport terminals.

Cost and time: about 45 to 60 minutes to central Osaka, for about ¥15,000 to ¥20,000.

Tip: a late-night surcharge of about 10% to 20% applies between 10pm and 5am. It's a good idea to have your hotel's address in Japanese ready for the driver.

Rental car: for trips beyond Osaka

If you're also going to Wakayama, Nara, the boathouses at Ine or other places that are harder to reach by public transport, you can arrange a rental car in Japan at Kansai Airport.

Cost: a small car starts from about ¥6,000 a day.

Tip: traffic drives on the left in Japan, and parking at hotels and in business areas in Osaka is expensive, so a car isn't worthwhile for the city alone. Bring your passport and the licence documents that Japan accepts for your country, and confirm them with the rental company before you go.

Late-night arrivals and staying at the airport

Most trains (Nankai and JR) and limousine buses stop running at around 11:30pm to midnight. If you land late, these are your options:

1. Getting there: book a private transfer in advance, or take a taxi directly to your hotel.

2. Shower rooms: Terminal 1 has paid shower rooms on the 3rd floor, so you can freshen up. Check the current hours.

3. Paid lounge: on the 2nd floor of the Aeroplaza, with free drinks, comfortable seating and showers, for those who'd rather not pay for a night in the city.

4. Airport hotels:
• Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport: linked to Terminal 1 and the Aeroplaza, so you can walk there.
• HATAGO INN Kansai Airport and Kansai Airport Washington Hotel: in Rinku Town, across from the airport, and good value.

Useful airport facilities: terminals, money and shopping

Moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

The JR and Nankai Kansai Airport Station is between Terminal 1 and the Aeroplaza. If you land at Terminal 2 with a low-cost airline such as Peach, follow the signs to the Terminal 2 bus stop and take the free shuttle bus to the Aeroplaza and Terminal 1, which takes about 7 to 9 minutes.

Money and useful apps

Currency exchange: the Terminal 1 arrivals hall has exchange counters and machines. Airport rates are usually a little worse, so change only enough for your trip into the city, and change the rest in Osaka.

Useful apps: a route app such as Norikae Annai helps with train times and routes, and Apple Wallet supports ICOCA and Suica on iPhone.

Duty-free souvenirs and airport food

Duty-free shopping: before you leave, you can buy popular souvenirs such as Shiroi Koibito, ROYCE' chocolate and Tokyo Banana at the duty-free shops in Terminals 1 and 2.

Airport food: Kamukura ramen (Terminal 1), Tsukiji Magoemon sushi (Terminal 1), 551 Horai steamed buns (Terminal 1, 2nd floor) and Nana's Green Tea (Terminal 2).

Where to stay in Osaka

Once you reach the city, a well-connected hotel makes the rest of your trip easier:

1. Namba and Shinsaibashi (good for Nankai trains): convenient for shopping and food.
• Hotel to consider: Tokyu Stay Osaka Hommachi

2. Umeda and Shin-Osaka (good for JR HARUKA and limousine buses): easy shinkansen connections to Kyoto and Kobe.
• Hotel to consider: Courtyard by Marriott Shin-Osaka Station

3. Universal Studios Japan: for those planning a full day at the park.
